Absence Space, located in Tainan, Taiwan, was established on August 10, 2021. In October of the following year, it was officially registered as a non-profit performing arts team. The core mission is to create an artist's creation base, fostering mutual observation of each other's work and lives, organizing book clubs, and sharing artistic creations. This facilitates an open space for regular exchange while providing art enthusiasts with the opportunity to engage in the field. The space includes a theater, exhibition area, and short-term artist residency, forming a public space for artistic production and exchange through community-building among artists.
In addition to internal daily interactions, we actively connects with other arts organizations and spaces externally. The name "Absence" reflects a contemplation on "why existence." In the theater, the areas not illuminated by light are considered nonexistent; they serve as a backdrop to the existence illuminated by light. While discussions in the theater often focus on the illuminated areas, the name "Absence " redirects attention to the depth and creativity within darkness, moving beyond the visible surface world and giving the concept of "nonexistence" a new spatial and meaningful existence beyond visual perception. Over the past two years, Absence Space has not only established cultural networks and audience communities through various artistic activities but has also actively expanded its international connections.
In 2023, it particularly engaged in collaborative exchanges with artist spaces in Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. Initiating independent exchange residency programs, especially in the field of performance art, the theater aims to develop long-term cooperative relationships in a more independent and in-depth manner. During the process of building international network relationships, Absence Space has gradually attracted international artists who autonomously apply for residencies. Particularly notable is the growing interest from international artists, especially in the field of live performance art. Absence Space aspires to evolve into a cross-border artistic hub, fostering a space that transcends national boundaries.
